The Precondition of Desire

Among all experiences of stress is a certain precondition upon which the experience is brought about: desire. This desire manifests itself in shades of attraction and aversion to experience. In the case of boredom, there is an aversion to the current experience, and an attraction for some form of entertainment. In the case of hunger, an aversion to the feeling of hunger and the concept of malnourishment, and an attraction to food which would satiate that hunger, ther scents and flavors. Without desire, even the feeling of pain would not be experienced as stressful, for there is no internal objection to it.

The goal

If an agent has a goal, then there is a preference.

Transforming Unresolvable Insecurities Into Resolvable Desires

There are instances where an insecurity dependent on some condition cannot be resolved the the level of those conditions due to impossible constraints. In this case, it may be possible to dissove the insecurity be inverting it into a resolvable desire, where a normally inferior state is taken up to be desirable, and then accordingly resolved due to its feasibiliy.

The Precondition of Preference

When one may ask what is superior, when one chooses among a set of options based on which is most favorable, that is based on the underlying tendency of desire. Thus, this question of superiority is only relevant only insofar as preference remains.

Craving

What are the mechanics of craving? We wish to understand it so that it can be controlled and maintained to an ideal standard. One that is condusive to sustained contentment.

What are the objects of craving? Can craving be restricted to only those objects which are readily obtainable? For unfulfilled craving leads to contentment. Or rather, could the needs of any craving be readily satisfied through the power of manifestation, akin to a lucid dream?

The Ideal Desires

If there must be desire, let it be for the aquisition of power, purity, and knowledge thereof, so that ones existence may perpetually tend towards a superior ideal, and eventually perhaps liberation itself.

Handling Desire

Use a combination of these techniques, listed preferentially:

  1. Equanimity
  2. Ignorance
  3. Gratification

Optimizing Desire

Modify and discard the expensive and impure. Simplify, make them efficient. The more streamlined the defilements, the more reliable the resolution.

Theory of Desire

What is the source of desire? When there is an apparent desire, consciousness of its corresponding object brings about its gratification. When the desire is not apparent, still, consciousness of the same object can still bring about gratification, as if the desire was latent and only made active upon contact with its object.

As desire is being continually gratified, there is a great resolution and attenuation of desires that would otherwise be present. How does this all work? By understanding the machanics of desire, an ideal being and world can be constructed such that there is a continual gratification of a high degree.

Two Approaches

  1. To satisfy the desire
  2. To abandon the desire

The total fulfilment of either approaches qualifies as the ultimate attainment.

Preferences

Each individual comprises of two sets containing objects which he likes and dislikes respectively. They can delight in those objects which they share in common, but there can be conflict when another possesses objects that he does not enjoy. The problem is amplified when one side possesses more of these than the other.

Enjoyment examines the satisfaction of desire; renunciation examines relinquishment. Motivation considers how desire can shape action, and stress considers its unresolved forms.

The resolution on indefinite gratification explains its theoretical sufficiency while its supporting conditions persist.
