The goal is indefinite happiness, so how is it achieved? The following framework will be used to guide our research.
Volition is the input, and happiness is the output. What one does affects both happiness in the future, as well as future volition.

Optimization is but a Prediction
Planning and executing what is deemed to be optimal functionally operates on a model of assumptions and predicted outputs. Thus, the actual mechanics they represent do not matter. Only the outcomes.
In the case of fatalism, any set of inputs would be deemed as optimal as the results would be the same. This is only functionally true, though mechanically otherwise. Nonetheless this perspective is ideal for this purpose.
Thus, the goal is to optimize volition, and planning by the use of models is perhaps the most effective approach under uncertainty.
So the model needs to be developed and continuously updated in response to new information. Similar to the scientific method.

The Model is Composed of Assumptions
And theoretically the entire range of possible models can be determined completely a priori.
Thus, considering a particular research problem, its value is determined by the practical effect it would have on the existing operating model.
If the model would not meaningfully change as a result of any conclusion, it would be proper to simply ignore that endeavor altogether as it would simply be a waste of time and effort.
Thus by the frontloading of a priori design we can determine the most valuable problems needing to be solved for maximum efficiency.

What do I ought to do? You ought to do what is consistent with the root of that question.
What is the root of that question? Aversion to feeling bad. In this case, aversion to the uncertainty of not knowing what you ought to do.
What actions are consistent with that root? Actions that lead to not feeling bad.
Why? Because the aversion to feeling bad underlies entire range of what you ought to do.
Some actions lead to not feeling bad in the short term, others in the long term. Some lead to both feeling bad and not feeling bad. Which should I choose? I’m not sure. Choose whichever you prefer so long as it does not lead solely to feeling bad.
What can I do to not feel bad? Do what leads to the reduction of the acquisition of displeasure.
How is acquisition of displeasure avoided? The factors leading to it are reduced, either directly, or indirectly via the presence of factors leading to the acquisition of pleasure or neutralness.
For example: when listening to music while hungry, both sensations are possible. But if I focus on the music, I feel predominantly good with the primary consciousness of the sensation of music, and if I focus on the hunger, I feel predominantly bad likewise. Thus the consciousness and acquisition of one feeling overrides the other.
What are those factors? Displeasure and aversion are its primary factors. Sensation and perception are the primary factors of displeasure. Input into the sensory streams via body or mind and consciousness are the primary factors of sensation.

The ability to control both one’s preferences and the objects of consciousness such that desire is constantly minimized and satisfied.

Base Solution
As above, so below. Let the general scheme be the same as it is here. Reduce the undesirable and amplify the desirable.

Redundancy
Purity is the primary objective, but power is a factor of redundancy. With an impure mind, one is vulnerable to stress, and power is there to protect the mind from it. Until cessation is attained, power will be a necessary redundant factor.
