Pleasure and Pain

Two objects of desire can be observed in the attraction to pleasure and the aversion to pain. The mapping of a sensation to its hedonic tone can be seen as an act of perception. For instance, where some may find the bitter taste of dark chocolate to be displeasing, others find it pleasing. This is not due to an inherent difference in the sensation, but rather a difference in perception.

It is not only the sensations of the five senses that can be felt, but also the sensations of mind as well, such as ideas and concepts.

The distinction between feeling and emotion matters when examining stress. Visual experience offers a concrete case, while the eighteen mental preoccupations provide a Buddhist classification. The glossary collects the working definitions.

The current resolution on happiness distinguishes sensation, its perceived pleasantness, and its personal uptake.
