The Inadequacy of Human Existence

The vicistitudes of human experience mediated by the various failings of the body, together with the natural incompatibility of a ruthless environment, make for a brittle existence subjugated by uncertainty and danger. Even for those fortunate elites who have available all the material arrangements they could hope to attain in this world, they are still beset by the inability for the human body to gratify their desires in a sustainable manner. This body actively downregulates itself to ensure a pathetic balance of pain and pleasure. But there is the exception of one immersed in samadhi.

The Medium of the Body

With the five kinds of sensation of sight, sound, smell, taste, and bodily senstion being supportive of pain and pleasure, the body presents itself as a primary limiting factor in the satisfaction of desire. A tight interdependence is also observed between the mind and the brain, with the onset of neurological disease being a factor for great displeasure, further highlighting the lynchpin of the body.

Death is Inevitable

  • Even with the attainment of biological immortality, eventual death via external disaster is inevitable
  • Thus human existence is not sustainable for indefinite happiness

Human rebirth is loathsome and dangerous

  • Can be born with disorder and disfigurement
  • And in bad circumstances
  • Also stuck with the body
  • But Dr. Ian Stevenson’s research indicates that it is possible

Mortality and the Futility of Transhumanism

Even if, with significant technological and scientific advancement, humanity were to reap the fruits of biological immortality, environmental control and automation, virtual realty, and neurological mastery, there still lies the inevitable possibility of death by the physical deterioration and destruction of the body resultant of unforseen tragedies. Currently many thousands of people pass each and every day from unatural death. A single lapse of attention is all that is needed to bring about an inescapable disaster. Even with biological immortality, one would still face escalating existential threats—beginning with Earthly disasters, followed by cosmic events like stellar death, black holes, and ultimately the universe’s demise through heat death, vacuum decay, or the Big Rip. No physical form can indefinitely survive the entropic and structural limits of this physical universe.

The Intrinsic Futility of Human Existence

What pleasure does a rich man enjoy? For he lives no more than a handful of decades wherein great enjoyment is possible. Both the rich and the poor are subject to aging, illness, and death. One may live a happy life, another a miserable one; neither of them count when they are suffering on their death beds, uncertain of their fate beyond. Be it a happy life or a sad one, the intelligent person who lives dedicated to the afterlife is superior to the negligent. The man who sacrifices this life for one that is superior in the next is the greater of these two individuals.

Aside from the fact that no earthly pleasure is all that amazing or long lasting, regardless, it is never worth the opportunity cost of research and practice for the betterment of lives beyond. If pleasures and enjoyment comes along the way, great. Otherwise, they simply aren’t worth it, and one would gain quite a huge amount by relinquishing the pursuit of them.

The Inescapable Danger of Injury

So long as one exists within a human body, they are subject to immense pain and death at a moments notice. No satisfactory solution within the paradigm of thirst could ever take place within the human body given an uncertain environment.

The Better Life

The Certain Life of Humans

  1. Pretty Certain Solutions

Comfort and sensual indulgence in this life can be established with a level of predictibility, but this certainly has its drawbacks, and it does not protect against aging, illness, injury, depression, etc. and death. There is also samadhi. But again, death is still quite certain. I’m not aware of any immortals here…

The Cancer of the Body

The body is the source of a mix of pleasant and unpleasant feelings. Things like hunger, thirst, cold, and pain are unpleasant, and are a source of unhappiness due to the preference of our minds. It is subject to failure at any time, this is a toally inferior solution as far as the conditioned goes. Thus, we seek a superior body in a superior world; a heavenly abode.

The Flawed Nature of Humanity

  • This human complex is insufficient in reliably delivering the objects of desire
  • Misfortune is unavoidable
  • Our hunger exceeds the capacity of the body and world
  • Even in a utopia our craving cannot be completely satisfied; technology is not the solution.
  • We die

Dependant Existence

It is observed that the typical experience of this world takes place through the five bodily senses and the mind having taken dependence on the brain. While awake, sensations occur primarily through the physical senses and secondarily within the mind in addition to thoughts. At night, sensations occur purely in mind via dreams, and the lack thereof (or at least the lack of the recollection of) in deep sleep.

With pleasant and unpleasant sensations being categorically stable, happiness purely dependent on favorable experience is totally limited by the nature of the human body and its situation in this world, resulting in an unpredictable and mediocre existence.

One superior existence is postulated with mind taking dependence on a body with the natural tendency to produce predominantly pleasant sensations situated in a world capable of producing their prerequisites. In other words, a heavenly existence.

Three opportunities for modification:

  1. World - aquire only the desirable
  2. Body - process to produce only the desirable
  3. Mind - interperet only in a desirable way (perception)

The relinquishment of desire being a fourth.

You Think You’re Safe?

Your body is a clump of cells hypersensitive to injury. That pain will set you on fire. Think it won’t happen to you? There are videos online… LOTS of them. If you’re brave enough to face the truth then take a good look. So long as we are subject to this pain, there is no safety or sanctuary in human existence.

The Big Problem

  • You’re gonna die.
  • Sentience is readily observed to arise in other bodies.
  • Most known sentience is relatively unhappy.
  • So there is the possibility of existing in an unhappy state after death.
  • Now what?

The limitations described here motivate questions about rebirth and heavenly existence. Apotheosis develops the possibility of a different body and world.
